The Dropper
Medeski, Martin & Wood
2000 [Blue Note]

Download unrestricted MP3s

On their second studio album for the Blue Note label groovin’ funksters MMW hark back to their more experimental work from the early-90s. Guitarist Marc Ribot features on several tracks, while some frenetic alto sax is contributed courtesy of ex-Sun Ra sideman Marshall Allen. A good effort, but hard to beat 1998’s Combustication.

Largo
Brad Mehldau
2002 [Warner]

Download unrestricted MP3s

In an adventurous departure from his Bill Evans stylings, Mehldau teams with producer Jon Brion for a sonic excursion that surprised more than a few. Although previously enjoying success with more traditionally-styled efforts, allowing for a bit of room to move proved to be a big hit with Mehldau's fans. There's no denying the man's talent.

Extended Play - Live at Birdland
Dave Holland Quintet
2003 [ECM] 2CDs

Download unrestricted MP3s

Bassist Dave Holland topped off a string of fine albums with this live double-CD by his current quintet. The title gives away what's on offer, with only one of nine tracks clocking in under ten minutes. Also atypical, instead of sax-man Chris Potter grabbing the limelight, this time around it is trombonist Robin Eubanks.

Erik Truffaz
2003 [Blue Note]

French jazz-electronica trumpeter Erik Truffaz's second album for Blue Note. Strange Liberation
Dave Douglas
2004 [RCA]

Download unrestricted MP3s

An all-original set with guitarist Bill Frisell added to Douglas' usual quintet mix. The sound is something akin to what Miles Davis' second great quintet might have sounded like in the mid-60s had they already been electrified. The big difference is that Douglas constructs much of the music around Frisell's guitar, giving this a distinctly modern edge.

Suspended Night
Tomasz Stanko Quartet
2004 [ECM]

Download unrestricted MP3s

Following on from the mesmerising Soul of Things, this record again features Stanko's now-seasoned Polish trio. As the title suggests, the record is a journey through a night that has become suspended in its own timelessness. The music is melodic, yet inventive. A remarkably mature record that signals the rise of a major artist.

Class Trip
John Abercrombie
2004 [ECM]

Download unrestricted MP3s

A brilliant album from guitarist John Abercrombie in the classic ECM mould. The lineup from 2002's superb Cat 'n' Mouse reassemble - featuring the Joey Baron/Marc Johnson rhythm section and violinist Mark Feldman. The interplay between Abercrombie and Feldman is dynamic, justifying all the critical plaudits coming this CD's way.

The Way Up
Pat Metheny Group
2005 [Nonesuch]

Download unrestricted MP3s

Guitarist Metheny and regular collaborator pianist/keyboardist Lyle Mays churn out a 68-minute epic that sounds like everything one has come to expect from PMG, while still smelling fresh as a daisy. The Steve Rodby/Antonio Sanchez rhythm section is in deft form, with Vietnamese trumpeter Cuong Vu adding some nice touches.
