The Art Of the Trio - Volume Three
Brad Mehldau
1998 [Warner]

Download unrestricted MP3s

An achingly romantic set from Bill Evans-inspired pianist Mehldau. Half the record consists of originals, with the rest an inspired selection of standards and covers. The Jorge Rossy/Larry Grenadier rhythm section provides capable support, making this an excellent place to start exploring the work of this fine contemporary pianist.

These Are the Vistas
The Bad Plus
2003 [Columbia]

Download unrestricted MP3s

Don't be put off by critical descriptions of this piano trio's music as "power jazz". The Bad Plus play a distinctive style of jazz that is highly creative and, at times, mesmerising. All band members contribute original compositions to the set - with covers of pop songs by Nirvana, Blondie and Aphex Twin topping things off.

Seven Days of Falling
E.S.T.
2003 [Act/215]

Despite failing to live up to their major label promotion as the next big thing in jazz, Sweden's Esbjörn Svensson Trio still has plenty to offer recording for an independent label. Svensson is a pianist capable of beautiful melodies and, while there are some pop touches evident, most of what is here is stately and graceful. Easy on the ear.

Changing Places
Tord Gustavsen Trio
2003 [ECM]

Download unrestricted MP3s

For his first release on ECM, Norwegian pianist Tord Gustavsen rarely strays from the formula sonic-soundscape listening experience commonly associated with the label. It's all very pleasing and while there is little doubt that Gustavsen is one of the most talented pianists in jazz, one wonders what he might unleash when fully unconstrained.

Day is Done
Brad Mehldau Trio
2005 [Nonesuch]

Download unrestricted MP3s

With a new drummer, Jeff Ballard, in tow pianist Mehldau lashes out with one of his liveliest sets to date. Consisting mainly of pop covers, the record is an outstanding example of this type of jazz set. The Beatles, Burt Bacharach, Paul Simon and Nick Drake all get the once over - with a couple of fine originals proving a point in the middle.

Viaticum
E.S.T.
2005 [Spamboolimbo]

Download unrestricted MP3s

A diving accident in June 2008 has robbed the world of one of its most talented jazz pianists-Swedish-born Esbjörn Svensson. Svensson's trio has achieved legendary status in Europe, in the process proving that jazz doesn't need to continually reinvent itself in order to sound fresh and vibrant. A superb follow-up to 2003's Seven Days of Falling.

The Time
Mozdzer, Danielsson & Fresco
2005 [Outside Music]

Download unrestricted MP3s

On their first effort, the multi-national teaming of Leszek Mozdzer (Poland), Lars Danielsson (Sweden) and Zohar Fresco (Israel) manages to out-ECM ECM. Highly-talented pianist Mozdzer is the most noted of the trio, rising to fame with delicate 'Impressions on Chopin' (1999). Here he splits compositional duties with Danielsson about 50-50.

Astaroth: Book of Angels Volume 1
Jamie Saft Trio
2005 [Tzadik]

Download unrestricted MP3s

Probably the best of a series of albums by various mostly New York-based artists playing out sets of compositions from John Zorn's Masada repertoire. Keyboardist Jamie Saft, a veteran studio musician, is in sensational form here, giving credence to his growing reputation as one of the best in the business. Zorn has to be happy with this.
